Smart Track Rudder System
This footbrace and rudder control assembly includes ergonomically designed, two-part foot pedals that offer significant advantages over anything else on the market. Unlike other systems, your feet don't slide back and forth to steer. The lower half of the pedals is locked in position so you remain in a solid brace at all the times. Steering is accomplished by minute pressure from your toes to the top half of the pedals. Even while seated, pedal position is easily adjusted for different users. Pedals cannot be accidentally dislodged and the track design prevents sand build-up.
You may purchase just the Toe Pilot footbraces to retrofit an existing rudder, or a complete footbrace-and-rudder combination. The complete footbrace-and-rudder combination includes the rudder housing, cool rudder wedgie, rudder blade, footbraces, cables, cable housing, instructions, and hardware. The Smart Track's rudder is foil-shaped to prevent stalling and decrease drag. Rudder blades are available for single and double kayaks, simply choose Single "Sgl" or Double "Dbl".
Rudder Mounting Options:
"Short Pin Mount" is typically used for deck mounting. Installation will require drilling the pin hole through the deck into an epoxy end-pour, on kayaks without a transom or flat stern. Some boats may need stern modification, and this should be done before applying any finish coatings (varnish or paint). Examples are Chesapeakes (except the Sport Tandem), Shearwaters singles, Night Heron, West River, and Arctic Hawks.
"Long Pin Mount" is our most popular choice, and is best used with the CLC rudder mount. The rudder mount can be modified to fit many different model kayaks and is required for the Mill Creek kayaks (modification required). We also offer a rudder mount for boats with a flat transom.
"Stern Mount" is only for kayaks with a transom. These include the Wood Ducks, Pax, Shearwater Double and Chesapeake Sport Tandem.
Footbrace Mounting Notes: If you don't want your footbrace screws to show on the outside of your hull, you may consider using CLC's Footbrace Mounting Kit. To be able to mount the Toe-Pilots with the Footbrace Mounting Kit, you will also need the Smart Track Vertical Adjustment Kit. The Footbrace Mounting Kit will not work without it.
